Three Cases of Olivopontocerebellar Atrophies

Abstract
Olivopontocerebellar atrophy (OPCA) is a term created by Dejerine and Thomas which comprises a series of heterogenous disease whose only common factor is the lass of neurons in the ventral portion of the pons, inferor olives and cerebellar cortex.-Its occurrence may be heredofamilial or sporadic.
Although its major clinical manifestations are ataxia, dysarthria, nystagmus and signs of pyramidal dysfunction, there may be degeneration in the optic nerve, cerebral cortex, basal ganglia, spinal cord and peripheral nerve with their associated symptoms. In this report, we present observation of three cases who were thought to be OPCAs by clinical features and radiologic abnormalities, although not supported by autopsy.
